The leadership of the Democratic Party met this afternoon to discuss the organization of the party. PD has been in chaos for nearly 2 years and discussions have started on its organization both at the local and central level. Yesterday there were two different positions from the parliamentary group and the College of Speakers.
The MPs demand that the organization starts from the bottom up. So once the grassroots elections are held and the party chairman is elected at the end. But the heads of the branches came out against this proposal of Gazmet Bardhi. They demanded that a new leader of the party be elected by July 15, as it cannot continue without a leader.
Both proposals will be discussed today and it is the Presidency that takes the final decision. Today's meeting will be accompanied by debates, as some members have openly declared that they are against the elections for the chairman. Many of them see the opening of the race now as a return of Lulzim Basha. The latter has started the campaign and has clearly shown that the moment the race opens, he will compete. A postponement of the process closes the door for Basha, but if the race opens, there is no obstacle for him to compete.
Looking at the history of developments in DP, the Presidency has always leaned towards Basha. The most recent case is that of going out with candidates in some municipalities of the country. Bardhi and Tabaku opposed, but the Presidency overruled them and decided to have candidates in some municipalities. However, it remains to be seen if there will be a final decision, or if the discussions will continue for several days.
