Erion Veliaj, the mayor of Tirana dismissed by decision of Prime Minister Edi Rama, has filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court, requesting that the entire process that removed him from the office of Mayor be declared invalid.
The entire process was directed by Babloku, who, at the SP Assembly on September 11, announced the start of procedures for Veliaj's dismissal, simultaneously announcing Ogerta Manastirliu as the SP candidate for the by-elections in the Municipality of Tirana.
The process for Veliaj's removal was concluded on September 25, the date when the Council of Ministers decided on the dismissal, after previously the Municipal Council, with the votes of the SP, DP and several opposition allies, proposed the dismissal of the Mayor, who won his 3rd consecutive term in the 2023 elections.
Rama has continued the procedures, notifying the CEC of the vacancy, but also forwarding to the President of the Republic the request to announce the date of the elections for the Municipality of Tirana, and several other municipalities, where there will be early partial elections due to the resignations of the Mayors.
Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court has appointed the rapporteur for the case regarding Veliaj's request, while explaining to News24 that it has registered the dismissed Mayor's request and announced the publication of the registration.
According to the notice, this announcement has the effect of a public notice for all parties involved, including the Council of Ministers and the President of the Republic.
This means that they are already informed of the filed request. The Court also emphasizes that the suspension of the dismissal decision remains in force until a final decision.
"The court has published the registration of the request. The announcement is equivalent to a public announcement," the Constitutional Court's response states.
