Ilir Alimehmeti, one of the representatives mandated by the Democratic Party for negotiations with opposition parties regarding the selection of the opposition candidate for mayor of Tirana, has extended a hand of cooperation to all opposition forces and that they are open to proposals of concrete names, including from non-political candidates.
" The DP is open to cooperating with all opposition forces and extends a hand of cooperation to any entity that wishes to contribute to the selection of a candidate as representative as possible for Tirana. We are ready to consider any name that is proposed to us, even from parties that do not have parliamentary representation," said Alimehmeti, on the show "NOW with Erla Mëhillin" on Euronews Albania.
He also publicly invited MP Agron Shehaj and his party to become part of the process.
" We also invite Mr. Shehaj to sit with us and, if he has specific names, to bring them up for discussion," he said.
Regarding the possibility of cooperation with candidate Arlind Qori and the Together Movement party, Alimehmeti said that the DP has not developed contacts, as they share opposite ideological axes.
" We have not had any offers for Mr. Qori because we represent diametrically opposed approaches. He is an extreme leftist and has clearly stated that he will run separately, " declared Alimehmeti.
He emphasized that the DP did not go to the discussion tables with predetermined names, but is seeking names from its allies and representatives of civil society.
" We have not put any conditions on the table and we do not accept any. But we are open to discussing public figures, well-known, engaged in civic and not necessarily political causes, " he said.
Alimehmeti said that they are currently in the phase of collecting names to see which candidate can unify the opposition and have broad citizen support.
" This is a mechanism to ensure that that candidate is as representative and has the potential to win as possible," he concluded.
