Just 5 days after Erion Veliaj's dismissal from his position as mayor, the Council of Ministers has officially notified President Bajram Begaj of the vacancy in the Municipality of Tirana.
In the letter dated September 30, Prime Minister Edi Rama also informs the head of state about vacancies in the country's other 5 municipalities, Vlora, Berat, Mati, Cerriku and Tepelena.
The former mayor of Tirana, Veliaj, has appealed the decision to dismiss him to the Constitutional Court, the law remains to be interpreted, as the rapporteur for the case has been appointed, but not the date of the hearing. According to the deadlines set by the law, the Constitutional Court has four months to set a hearing to review this appeal. It remains to be seen whether the decision of the Constitutional Court will coincide with the procedures undertaken by the Council of Ministers for his dismissal.
Meanwhile, the President of the Republic has a deadline of 48 hours, starting today, to promulgate the decree.
Thus, we will soon have the date of the partial elections for the six municipalities in the country, which have been left without leaders.
We recall that Veliaj was officially dismissed from the position of mayor on September 25, 2025, by decision of the Council of Ministers, following the proposal of the Tirana Municipal Council. The reason for his dismissal was his absence from work for three consecutive months.
