Are Berisha's 'Primaries' failing? Number of MPs withdrawing

Sources from the Democratic Party say that there are around 300 candidates who have submitted documentation to compete in the primaries....

The primaries process is expected to reignite debates within the Democratic Party once again. In the local elections, there were many clashes at the end of the race, but this time the signals are that it is being boycotted as a process.

Today, the number of MPs who have decided not to participate has increased to three, while it should be noted that a day earlier, Indrit Hoxha, Secretary for Diaspora, also decided to leave.

Meanwhile, as for the deputies, it is learned that after Helidon Bushti, Emilja Koliqi and Ferdinand Xhaferri will not participate in the Primary. The latter came out with a public reaction today, announcing his distancing himself from the process.

"I have been against this model of primaries from the beginning that harm the opposition more than they help it," he said.

But in addition to the resignations of MPs, in some districts it is learned that the interest of candidates in participating in the primaries has not been very high.

In total, across the country, sources from the Democratic Party say that there are around 300 candidates who have submitted documentation to compete in the primaries.

In the Tirana district, some of the most well-known names of the DP will compete in Parliament or in the Municipal Council, where the name of Jorida Tabaku stands out, who has been a member of parliament for Tirana since 2013 and is one of the most important figures of the DP.

From the Tirana Municipal Council, doctors Ilir Alimehmeti and Ilda Zhulali have applied to be part of the primaries and be elected deputies. Andi Mustafaj, the son of the founder of the Democratic Party, Besnik Mustafaj, who heads the "Brain Gain" department and is working in Unit 1 in Tirana, will also be part of the primaries.

In Durrës, the primary will be Igli Cara, who ran for the Municipality of Durrës in the 2023 local elections with the support of Sali Berisha. Also running in the primary in Durrës will be the spokesperson of the Democratic Party, Floriana Garo.

From the group of branch chairmen who want to run for DP deputies, it stands out that former judge Gjin Gjoni will run in Lezha, Luan Hoti in Durrës, Petrit Doda in Tirana, and Bledi Himci in Elbasan.

However, the primaries are only the basis for selecting candidates for MPs, as the final list will be drafted by the DP leadership. /Pamphlet
