Former DP candidate for deputy Aulon Kalaja explained what happened at this Thursday's meeting between a number of Democratic Party figures.
As a participant there, Kalaja said that this meeting is neither a new movement, nor a faction, nor an attempt to create a new party, but simply a friendly coffee among democrats, where, according to him, the challenges and problems that the DP is going through were presented.
Kalaja said that the invitation was made by Ervin Salianji, while the meeting took place in the premises of a private hotel in the capital, where some of the most voted names on the open list or primaries of the Democratic Party gathered.
" It was a meeting that did not take place in the DP, it was a simple meeting between some democrats who received enough votes from the open list. It is not a new party, I am not part of any movement, no new faction or new party. It was simply a friendly coffee. No news, no statement, no photo was produced. Issues that concern the DP were discussed. I had criticisms of the DP and I made them publicly. I was asked on the phone to participate in this meeting, the invitation was made by Ervin Salianji. I participated in this meeting and I will participate in any meeting that is in the best interest of the DP and its revival ," said Kalaja.
He added that everyone spoke about the problems of their own district.
" We talked about the problems and challenges. I spoke about Durrës and the others about the respective regions. I think it is a historic moment for the DP to start a reflection process with an idea of how to win. The DP is a party that must win the elections and come to power, this is the main idea. I will say what I have said myself and my positions, because it is not ethical to bring up the discussions of others ," he said.
Kalaja emphasized that one of the main topics was the electoral code.
" I talked about the electoral code, where the DP is at a point where the new electoral code will be made and the basis must be questioned, the candidates must be questioned. The National Council has not met since March. I think it is time to meet to talk about the analysis and the electoral code. The Municipality of Kruja has 100 thousand inhabitants and there is no MP in parliament, neither from the SP nor from the DP. This is the electoral code that we have and there are concerns that need to be addressed ," Aulon Kalaja told "Euronews Albania".
He categorically distanced himself from any initiative for a new party.
" If there is any intention to create a new party, I distance myself. But I participate in every meeting for the good of the DP. If there are people who have a background, I am not part of it. I am not being fished out, nor am I being used. I am in the DP, I will never leave the DP, I will not go to any other formation, not even the SP. I am for reform, so that we reform the DP as a European party to respond to current challenges, because we can no longer be with the expression 'participation is important '", said Aulon Kalaja.
We recall that this Thursday, Ervin Salianji appeared in the company of several figures who, although they were not elected deputies on May 11, received a significant number of votes, ranking them among the most supported by the democratic base.
