Autocrats are only overthrown when the opposition becomes an alternative
Protests yesterday in Tirana & Protests in Hungary

The case of Hungary showed that even the strongest regimes can be overthrown through the vote and citizen mobilization. In Albania, the opposition seems to be moving in the opposite direction: more protests, but less spirit and fewer people.

When Viktor Orban lost power in Hungary after 16 years in power, many saw it as the end of an era of modern European autocracy. A leader who had changed the constitution, seized the media, weakened the judiciary, and built an entire system of personal power was toppled not by a violent revolution but by an opposition that finally understood the basic rules of overthrowing autocrats.

The victory of the Hungarian opposition did not come by chance. It was built on several principles that political history has repeatedly proven.

The first was unity. In Hungary, the opposition created a broad coalition, uniting different political forces for one goal: Orbán's removal. They understood that the battle was not won through personal egos or internal wars, but by creating a large social majority.

The second was the fight from the center . Peter Magyar did not build a radical campaign for militants, but targeted the gray layer of the electorate, wavering voters and disillusioned citizens. This is what brought a record turnout in the election, almost 80%, the highest level since the fall of communism in Hungary.

The third was the focus on the economy and corruption . The Hungarian opposition did not waste time with abstract slogans about democracy, but spoke about the real lives of citizens: poverty, corruption, clientelism and the enrichment of the elites close to power.

The fourth was to expand the electoral base . Instead of giving up on rural areas, considered Orban's strongholds, the opposition invested in them. It tried to convince the opponent's voters as well, and not just to keep its own militants motivated.

The fifth was the rejection of division . Orban had built his power on the division and polarization of society, but when citizens began to tire of the government's corruption and arrogance, the opposition exploited this fatigue by presenting itself as a unifying alternative rather than another source of conflict.

And the sixth was massive and inspiring protests . The Hungarian opposition organized large, peaceful, and energetic demonstrations in Budapest, creating a sense that change was actually possible. The protests were not just a political ritual, but turned the opposition into a popular movement.

This is where the strong contrast with Albania begins.

The Albanian opposition held its eighth national protest against the Rama government yesterday. But unlike Budapest, the protests in Tirana increasingly give the feeling of consumption rather than growth. Instead of mobilizing new layers or the gray electorate, the opposition seems to be gradually losing some of its traditional supporters.

The main problem is that the Albanian opposition is failing to fulfill almost any of the conditions that brought about change in Hungary.

The Hungarian opposition was based on the fight against corruption, the leader of the Albanian opposition is on trial accused of corruption.

The Albanian opposition has no real unity, but centralized control around a single figure. This is because Berisha has been tried and is not seen as an alternative. There is no openness to the center, but a discourse that often speaks only of the militants. There is no internal political competition, but a return to the model of the undisputed leader.

Sali Berisha has gone so far as to run alone for the leadership of the Democratic Party on May 23. A party that seeks to overthrow what it calls an autocratic regime, meanwhile, is conducting a formal process without real rivals within itself.

And this is the Albanian paradox: the opposition accuses the government of concentrating power, but it itself functions on the same vertical logic.

In classic writings on the overthrow of autocrats, from Gene Sharp to the experiences of Eastern Europe, one idea is repeated over and over again: regimes don't fall just because citizens are angry. They fall when the opposition manages to turn anger into hope and hope into a majority.

In Serbia, Milosevic was overthrown when the opposition turned into a mass movement. In Poland, Lech Walesa won because he united different layers of society. In Hungary, the opposition won because it broke away from narrow party rhetoric and spoke about the everyday lives of citizens.

In Albania, the question today is not just whether Edi Rama can win. The bigger question is whether the opposition is ready to change itself before seeking to change power.

Because the political history of countries with autocratic tendencies has shown a simple truth: autocrats do not survive on their own strength alone. Often, they are sustained by the weakness of the opposition. /Pamphlet
