The EU commissioner for enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, has stated today that he welcomes the decision of the European Council that wants to finally engage and take a big step to realize the enlargement of the EU.
"The European Commission has always been ready to make any proposal that would lead us towards the 2030 Enlargement," he says.
"What I think is that if this is a message from the Council that the Council wants to finally commit and take a big step to make the expansion happen, that is welcome news.
Of course, the Commission has always been ready to make any proposal that would take us there. I don't think it's about dates. I think it's more a matter of will, and also a matter of surrender; distribution by the EU, but also the offer by our partner countries in the Western Balkans or three other candidate countries.
The Commission is ready to make any proposal to get there and you will see this already in October, when we will want to make substantial proposals including the Growth Plan, which our President has already explained in Bratislava," he said. .
Prime Minister Edi Rama also reacted to this news.
The Prime Minister says that Oliver Varhelyi has never disappointed our region.
"OUR COMMISSIONER who never let our region down, especially in difficult times
Admittedly, after President Michel's surprise speech at the Bled Strategic Forum, the slow EU bus is becoming an interesting place to stay even without a spare seat - no doubt the passengers of the Western Balkans can endure better the long length of the journey while following a loud conversation among those seated... Let's hear what's next," writes Rama.
