The competition for the construction of the new commercial port in Porto Romano of Durrës has been opened and 15 international companies have expressed interest.
This is one of the most important projects for our country, which is expected to bring a high impact on the economy.
An international expertise will deal with the tendering, negotiation and monitoring of the contract for the construction of the new port. The tendering phase will last 45 days in March or April, pending the signing of the winning contract.
Prime Minister Rama said that with this project, they will not only give the city of Durrës a boost of development, but will also transform its image. For the head of government, the relocation of the commercial port to the suburbs provides a solution to an environmental wound.
" Our past is the same as the port of Durrës in the center of the city. An environmental wound, a physical wound that has continuously done great damage to the perspective and image, but also a wound in the socio-economic aspect, that all that mess and chaos has been a dark area of illegal and criminal activities. The removal of the commercial port from the center of the city and its placement here, entirely with a typology, with new characteristics and dimensions, is the opening of a new chapter in the history of the city, but also in the history of our national economy" , said Rama.
Rama said that there is expected to be a NATO military base in this port.
It will only be a port that will impact GDP, but it will also impact our security, as the design group has foreseen, it will also have its own military wing, offering NATO a new military base with optimal parameters. This port, which is being built from scratch, is a new port in Europe after many decades.
Jokingly, Prime Minister Rama said that these companies will turn them from sharks into dolphins, so that in the end they will give a show.

The construction of the new commercial port of Porto Romano is expected to be completed within 2026. The total cost of this project, which will be financed with budget funds according to the draft budget of 2024, will be 43 billion lek or about 427 million euros. The commercial port is being moved to Porto Romano, because the tourist port will be built in Durrës.
