Ilir Meta requests release from prison, the Supreme Court sets October 9 for the

The Supreme Court has set October 9 as the date for the hearing of former President Ilir Meta's request to reduce the security measure from "prison arrest" to a lighter one. The hearing will be held under the direction of Judge Irena Gjoka, who was appointed through an electronic draw.

Meta is seeking the annulment of previous decisions of the Special Court of First Instance and the Court of Appeal, which denied his release. In the latest decision, issued on August 13, the Court of Appeal upheld his pre-trial detention, rejecting the defense's claims that there were no legal conditions for his detention. The former president chose not to attend the hearing, while he was represented by his lawyers.

Meta is accused of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets, and is in his 11th month of detention. The case against him, his ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi and three others is still in the preliminary examination phase.

The selection of judge Irena Gjoka has caused political reactions. Officials from the Freedom Party called for her removal from the process, while lawyer Cakrani stated that it has not yet been decided whether to formally request her exclusion.
