Rama: The US has nothing to do with the war in Ukraine, it is up to the EU to negotiate peace
Prime Minister Edi Rama continues to act like a "Global Leader" when it comes to international appearance. Rama has given an interview to the Austrian newspaper " Kurier ", where he discussed everything from the war in Ukraine to the situation within the country and EU integration.
Regarding the war, Rama continues to insist that it is none of the US's business to end the conflict in Ukraine, but rather the EU's duty.
" When it comes to the European Union, I think the EU should talk to Russia and stop delegating its foreign policy to Washington. At the end of the day, Russia is the neighbor of the European Union, not the neighbor of the United States ," Rama said.
He further admitted that among the towers that are rising in the middle of Tirana there is also criminal money, although he tried to justify it by saying that "Albanians are hardworking people."
“ If you look at the amount of drug money that is allegedly laundered in Europe, Albania plays only a very small role. Do we have problems of this kind? Yes, we do. But are these problems so big that they cause an uproar in Europe? I think this is ridiculous. People who come to Tirana for the first time see all these new buildings and ask themselves: What is going on here? It is possible because we work ,” he said.
The Austrian media has not escaped Rama's authoritarianism, pointing out the fact that the opposition calls him a dictator. But Rama seems to "like" this: " If they didn't call me a dictator, they would do a terrible job. I have no problem with that. I won't tell them to stop. I want them to lose again in the next elections. By saying this nonsense, they are ultimately working for us ."

-Why should the EU actually accept Albania?
It is not just about Albania, but about the entire region, the Western Balkans and the European Union itself. This part of Europe must not remain disconnected from the EU. For reasons of security and European unity, it is absolutely clear - at least to me - that there is no other way than the integration of the Western Balkan countries. The Western Balkans are at the heart of everything. Therefore, I am not talking about enlargement, but about unification.
-You promised your fellow citizens EU membership by 2030. Aren't you afraid of disappointing them?
Jo, nuk e thashë këtë thjesht lehtë, por bazuar në një marrëveshje me Komisionin Evropian. Pasi të përfundojnë negociatat, ne parashikojmë edhe dy vjet të tjera për proceset e ratifikimit. Kjo rezulton në vitin tonë të synuar 2030. Ky afat kohor bazohet në llogaritje të shëndosha. A mund të ndryshojë? Sigurisht, por jo për shkakun tonë. Nëse ndryshon për shkak të BE-së, kjo është një histori tjetër.
-Por, a ka Shqipëria kohë të mjaftueshme për të përvetësuar të gjitha reformat, për shembull, në luftën kundër korrupsionit?

-Përfaqësuesit e opozitës të quajnë diktator...
Nëse nuk do të më quanin mua diktator, do të bënin një punë të tmerrshme. Nuk kam problem me këtë. Nuk do t'u them të ndalen. Dua që të humbasin përsëri në zgjedhjet e ardhshme. Duke thënë këto budallallëqe, në fund të fundit po punojnë për ne.
-Nuk ka kaluar shumë kohë që kur pati luftë në Ballkanin Perëndimor. A është e mundur të qetësohet rajoni, ta bashkohet brenda BE-së?
Unë kam një dosje shumë të pastër. Në kuptimin metaforik, nuk kam qenë kurrë i përfshirë në një përleshje rajonale. Kam dosjen më paqësore të imagjinueshme. Ballkani Perëndimor nuk është Zvicër, por duhet të them gjithashtu: rajoni është ndryshe sot nga ç'ishte dikur. Është shumë më paqësor dhe ka shumë më tepër bashkëpunim, saqë nuk duhet të ankohemi. Ne kemi bërë më shumë në dekadën e fundit sesa në një mijë vitet e mëparshme. Deri në vitin 2014, nuk ka pasur asnjë rast të vetëm që udhëheqësit e Ballkanit Perëndimor të takohen, të ulen dhe të diskutojnë të ardhmen e rajonit. Që nga viti 2014, janë zhvilluar takime të panumërta. Nuk biem gjithmonë dakord, gjë që është në rregull. Por mendoj se aktualisht po përjetojmë periudhën më paqësore në historinë e Ballkanit Perëndimor.
-Turqia dhe Kina po përpiqen të fitojnë ndikim në Ballkan, dhe Rusia është gjithashtu e përfshirë. Si po e pozicionon veten Shqipëria në këtë?
Shqipëria është shumë e vogël për të qenë selektive. Ne duhet të flasim me të gjithë dhe të jemi në gjendje t'i kuptojmë të gjithë sa më mirë që të mundemi. Në 35 vitet që nga tranzicioni demokratik, nuk kemi pasur kurrë një vizitë shtetërore në Rusi, as nuk jemi vizituar. Dhe sinqerisht, kjo nuk na shqetëson shumë. Por kur bëhet fjalë për Bashkimin Evropian, mendoj se BE-ja duhet të flasë me Rusinë dhe të ndalojë së deleguari politikën e saj të jashtme në Uashington. Në fund të ditës, Rusia është fqinja e Bashkimit Evropian, jo fqinja e Shteteve të Bashkuara. Dhe ju duhet të flisni me fqinjët tuaj.
-A keni frikë nga luftëra të mëtejshme agresioni rus në Evropën Lindore?
I could be completely wrong, but I'm not worried at all. I don't believe Russia will invade any EU country. They are not even able to defeat the Ukrainian army in that part of Ukraine where they pursue their imperialist goals. I think Russia's provocations are part of their strategy.

I think those who hesitate now understand that hesitation is not a good idea. EU membership also includes the unification of the Western Balkans. We set sail towards Europe even when Europe was not on the horizon. We are not doing our homework to please the EU. We are doing this to make Albania more European and more democratic.
No one but the EU can teach a country how to build institutions as well as the EU. The Americans lack patience for that. They want to solve things with bombs and then preach about it. In Albania, we wouldn't be where we are today if it weren't for the EU. Okay, we wouldn't have the headaches or neuroses that come with it either. Working with the EU sometimes makes you feel very neurotic. You feel like you're climbing to the top of a minaret and shouting like crazy. But in the end, this whole process is very beneficial. It's bitter medicine. But: we're talking about medicine, not poison.
-Speaking of minarets, Albania would be the first Muslim-majority country in the EU.
If all Muslims in the world were like the Muslims of Albania, Allah and Jesus would be happy. Muslims and Christians live in Albania. I am Catholic, my wife is Muslim, and our two children from a previous marriage are Orthodox Christians. There is a common denominator: 92 percent of Albanians love the EU. Albania's EU membership is a way of showing that it is not about Muslims or Christians, but about geography, about geopolitics. We feel European, we are European, Europe is our most important religion. If we become members of the EU, our almost religious zeal for Europe may diminish, but for now we are real EU fanatics. /Translated by "Pamphlet"
