For the first time since the World Cup began, neither Germany nor Brazil will be part of the tournament's last eight. Their dominance lasted almost 100 years. In 1930, the tournament went straight from the group stage to the semi-finals, there was no last eight, and while Germany did not participate, Brazil failed to advance beyond the knockout stage.
