For the first time since the World Cup began, neither Germany nor Brazil will be part of the tournament's last eight. Their dominance lasted almost 100 years. In 1930, the tournament went straight from the group stage to the semi-finals, there was no last eight, and while Germany did not participate, Brazil failed to advance beyond the knockout stage.
Since 1934, Brazil and/or Germany have reached at least the quarter-finals, with the Brazilians winning five titles and the Germans taking three. But the era of the greats seems to be over.
