Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the planned investment in Zvërnec, calling it a historic opportunity for Albania's economic development and arguing that major projects are what change the fate of a country.
During a meeting with socialists in Vlora, as part of the 35th anniversary of the Socialist Party, Rama declared that the $4 billion investment will bring benefits that extend beyond the borders of the area where it will be built.
"This $4 billion investment in Zvërnec will be a blessing for the economy of all of Albania. It will not only bring money, but a multiplied value in all components of the economy," he said.
To support his argument, the prime minister brought to attention the case of Tivat in Montenegro, emphasizing that investments in elite tourism have turned it from a small coastal town into an international destination with millions of visitors each year.
Rama said that countries do not stagnate due to a lack of money, but rather due to a lack of vision and "big dreams," while harshly criticizing opponents of such projects.
"Peoples stagnate when they are led by charlatans and delusional people who say 'this country is only yours'. That's what Hitler said to the Germans. This means appealing to the darkest incitements of racism and self-isolation," Rama declared.
Rama said the country cannot move forward being led by “delusions and charlatans.” The prime minister opposed the slogan “Albania of Albanians,” emphasizing that the country needs respect.
According to him, the tourism sector faces a shortage of labor, while salaries in hotels and restaurants on the Albanian coast are comparable, and in some cases even higher, than those in Greece.
"Peoples who have been led by delirium and charlatanism have never done anything wrong. Albania belonged to Albanians when it became a bunker, when it took over the seas and mountains. Albanians for Albania, not Albania of Albanians. Albania of Albanians is like saying "my house is mine alone". This is not what Albania needs.
Albania needs respect and the voice of the imam, the priest, the color of whoever God has decided to bring to Vlora. This is Albania.
But when they say that Indians and Malays will come to us, taking our jobs in hotels and restaurants, do those who say this actually stay at the doors of hotels and restaurants looking for work?
These scoundrels also tell those who have rushed to Albania to follow all sorts of news. Not that some are enemies or competitors, but some have a different problem, that they don't have it with Vlora and the flamingos, but with the father and father-in-law of those who want to make investments in Albania.
We are fueling the war they have there with these charlatans of ours who tie a flag, swear with a house book and say "Albania belongs to Albanians". They say that these resorts will bring foreigners because they want to pay them for a piece of bread, while in Vlora's hotels and restaurants the salaries are the same or slightly higher than in Greece.
On our coast, from Dhërmi to Ksamil, salaries are the same or slightly higher than in Greece.
While they talk about properties, that Albania is being sold. Albania was raped long before you gave me the trust to lead. It was raped by the hooligans when they took the property titles from the boxes where they were kept. The Albanians of 1991-1992 took the property papers and shredded them. They made such a big mess that today the consequences are being paid.
We can't say that we cleaned up the whole mess, but we can say that we've done a lot to put things in order, and we've never done anything like the black stuff that comes out of the water for properties.
If we were the ones selling Albania, Sazani would have been privatized.
Others have wanted to make Sazan a tourist destination, but we are not doing what others did, who offered Sazan for privatization.
" Despite the fact that those who came to us are many times more powerful, we have told them that Sazan is the land and property of the Albanian people and that they are welcome to invest in Sazan, " Rama said.
