Iris Luarasi, who is running on the closed list of the Socialist Party for the Tirana District, spoke about the May 11 election campaign in the podcast 'Të Pashoq'.
Luarasi said that Edi Rama and the Socialist Party deserve a 4th mandate for the reforms they have undertaken, but also for the fact that there is no alternative, no strong opposition.
Luarasi said that due to Edi Rama's fate, especially in the last 4 years, we have had a divided opposition.
Do candidates campaign?
Of course, all candidates campaign, whether on the open or closed list. I campaign mainly in the media.
Who invited you and why did you accept it?
The invitation came to me from the Prime Minister. This was not the first time I had received an invitation. It had come before, but I had never considered myself within politics. I had been a political analyst, but without being part of a political party. When you are a person who is simply an opinion maker, you say what you think, and you bear the responsibility yourself. But when you are part of a political group, then what you say is your responsibility, but the group you are part of also takes it.
Your candidacy may have been a surprise to the public, but in all your analyses, you were perceived to be on the left.
We are political beings, each of us, even at the moment of voting, each person has a kind of conviction, is a political being. This part that says that people are outside of politics, at the moment they go to the ballot box, people intentionally or unintentionally make their choice, that is, political. I come from a family with left-wing convictions.
Have you ever voted for the Democratic Party?
I've never voted, but on one occasion I didn't go to vote because that's what I thought.
Why do you think the SP needs a 4th governing term?
It is an unprecedented case to ask for a 4th mandate, as a political party has its own costs and consumption. But the reason that the SP should get a 4th mandate depends on several processes, the main one being EU integration. This does not depend on our governors 100%, but depends on how you will vote on the reforms. Successful reforms are the opening of chapters, but the main reform is the one in Justice.
So, do you think this reform is a merit of the Socialist Party?
The reform was not the merit of the SP, as it was voted for by 140 MPs. The SP had endless opportunities to put sticks in the justice reform, but it did not do it. You can set up endless committees, but when there is no impact then we cannot prejudge the processes.
Do you really deserve a 4th term or is it because you don't have an alternative?
I think it's both. With a healthy, stronger opposition, without having those stories that we've seen, because I believe that a strong opposition would hold the Government accountable. We have a divided opposition, and this is lucky for Edi Rama and goes in favor of the Socialist Party. But we also have the reforms that have happened. We live in this country, we have 30 years of transition, how many times have all the European leaders come to Tirana?
