The new Parliament, which emerged from the May 11 elections, will begin its work in September, while the date of the first meeting will be determined by a presidential decree.
The existing Assembly ceases to function on September 9, while according to the Constitution, the new Assembly must convene no later than 10 days from this date.
And while the decree of the President of the Republic is awaited that will shed light on when the first session will be held, another question is who will lead this session?
According to the rules of procedure of the Assembly, the first session, which is constitutive, without an agenda and without debates, must be chaired by the oldest MP. In this case, the oldest MP in the Assembly is Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party and former Prime Minister. It is not known whether or not Berisha will accept to chair the first session this time, but 4 years ago he refused to exercise this duty.
And if Berisha refuses, then the next name is that of Tritan Shehu, another Democratic MP, who, like the Democratic leader, has been part of Parliament since 1991.
It is no surprise that Shehu also refuses to chair the first session of the new Parliament, which means that the baton will pass into the hands of the Socialists, where the oldest is Vasil Llajo, 69 years old. And fourth on the list, as the oldest MP, is Fatmir Xhafa.
In the new Assembly, 72 lawmakers will sit for the first time, 53 of whom are part of the SP group.
