Marjana Koçek's departure from the Socialist Party parliamentary group and her decision to retain her mandate as an independent MP has opened a debate within the ranks of the Socialists, with the first reactions coming from representatives of the new generation of this political force.
One of them is Helena Kaçe, the student who gained public attention after the opening of the Socialist Party Congress, where Prime Minister Edi Rama introduced her as one of the names representing the new generation in the SP.
In a reaction on social media, Kaçe described Koçek's decision as incompatible with the mandate she received under the Socialist Party banner. According to her, leaving a political force should also be accompanied by surrendering the parliamentary mandate if the MP no longer shares the same positions as the entity that nominated him/her.
Kaçe argued that political independence cannot begin only with the surrender of the party card, while the parliamentary mandate is maintained. She emphasized that, if the ideals of a deputy no longer match the political force to which he was elected, the most correct step is to return the mandate to those who gave him electoral trust. At the end of the reaction, she wished Koçek success in her political journey as an independent.
Alfred Muharremi, another representative of the new generation of socialists, held a similar position. He acknowledged Koçek's right to pursue another political cause, but questioned the moment when she chose to leave the SP parliamentary group.
According to Muharremi, the issues that Koçek declares she will defend now as an independent MP are not new and have been known even before. He added that the MP had the opportunity to raise these positions from the rostrum of the Parliament, while she was part of the socialist group.
Muharremi emphasized that handing in the membership card is not enough to politically conclude the departure from the Socialist Party. According to him, if an MP no longer represents the political force with which he received the mandate, then he must also give up his parliamentary mandate.
He linked this stance to the principle of political representation, arguing that the mandate is not only an individual act, but also the result of the trust of citizens and the party logo under which the candidate was elected.
Marjana Koçeku announced on Sunday that she is leaving the Socialist Party parliamentary group and will continue her political activity as an independent MP. Her decision has generated debate within the socialist camp, particularly on the issue of whether leaving the party should be accompanied by surrendering her mandate in the Assembly.
