During the conference with his Bavarian counterpart Markus Söder, Prime Minister Edi Rama also spoke about Albania's agreement with Italy for the accommodation of immigrants.
Rama described this agreement as an action that our country should do even though it is not part of the European Union.
He said that the EU is not a 'menu' where states can choose what they like and what they don't and emphasized that Albania has a duty to behave as a member state taking responsibility even though it is not yet part of the union.
" First I must say that it is very important to hear from both sides here in Germany that what we are doing is not in violation of any European value. We faced a lot of criticism, especially from our socialist friends. There is an agreement, if I am not mistaken, within the EU that rests on the concept of redistribution, which means that it cannot be the curse of Italy which is the first land across the Mediterranean seen from Africa and it cannot be the curse of Germany which is Germany. All countries must participate, we are doing exactly what is said in the European agreement, a reception center to use all procedures under European laws. There are many political conflicts based on the political interests of the day on this topic. This is a waste of time, it loses the horizon for the future. This is a matter of what the EU and Europe will be 10 years from now. This is the responsibility of the leadership of those who have been voted into it. We did what we had to do because for us the EU is not a menu where we can choose what we like and not take what we don't like. It is not a pleasant subject to deal with, but we have to make our contribution and it does not matter why we are not members of the EU. We have a duty to behave as such, it does not matter that you are the EU and we are not ", said Rama.
Among other things, he said that there should also be an effort to find a common solution regarding the Balkan corridor that can be seen by illegal immigrants as a way to then enter the most developed countries of Europe.
" You are talking about Turkey. Because it is the source of the Balkan corridor, if there will be another side from that side, then the Balkan corridor will be the main corridor. Why not try to find a common solution for the Balkan corridor now. These are solutions that are voluntary efforts, I don't see this as partisan. We are socialists, but this is a European problem for all those who have the responsibility to represent the citizens of Europe ", added the Prime Minister.
