The election of Fredi Beleri MEP has caused a sensation in the Greek and Albanian media. The vote for him has been described by the Greeks as a vote against Albania, since according to them, Beleri is being kept in prison unjustly.
However, there was also the movement of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. According to the Greek media, he had a phone call with Fredi Beleri today, to congratulate him on his success in the European elections. Meanwhile, tomorrow the Greek Prime Minister will hold a meeting with the other 6 MEPs of his party: Giorgos Autias, Evangelos Meimarakis, Eliza Vozeberg, Eleonora Meletis, Manolis Kefalogiannis and Dimitris Tsiodras.
Fredi Beleri has been in jail since a year ago, after being accused of buying votes. The court has sentenced him to 2 years of imprisonment, while the case has gone to Appeal. With his election as a member of the European Parliament, the situation is complicated, as the Athens-Tirana tensions will return. Greece will start the pressure to release him, under the pretext that an MEP is being held in a cell.
On the other hand, Albania is outside the EU and his election in the EP does not affect the authorities at all. Which means that he can enjoy the mandate in the EP only after leaving the cell. Also, he should be deprived of the right to be mayor, given that MEPs cannot hold other positions. This means that the way for new elections in Himare is now open, without waiting for the decision of the Appeal.
Freddy Beller's dark past
Fredi Beleri is an extremist who has always worked against Albanians. Although he claims to be a Greek minority, in fact he also knows that there are no Greeks in Himara, especially with the name Alfred. However, he carries on his back the massacre of Peshkpi.
Despite the accusations over the years, Fredi Beleri appeared on the steps of the Prosecution for Serious Crimes only in 2019. Eugen Beci, at that time the prosecutor, announced the launch of the investigation against the extremist politician and questioned him in the presence of two Judicial Police officers for three hours.
After the testimony, he was officially charged with the criminal offense of "Committing terrorist activities and activities".
This accusation against Fredi Beleri was related to the event that happened in the early morning of April 10, 1994, when a Greek paramilitary formation entered from the ground inside the border of Albania and took hostage the soldiers and the commander of the Peshkpi Border Post.
Despite the fact that Fredi Beleri has denied involvement in this event, a month later the Greek authorities detained seven people suspected of the event in Albania, who were members of the paramilitary group "MAVI". At the time of the arrest, these persons were also found with some firearms, which according to police reports were the weapons that had been stolen from the Albanian soldiers at the Peshkepi Border Post. However, the Court of Athens, after a month of detention in detention cells, concluded that "the evidence was not sufficient".
