Former president Ilir Meta reacted today for the first time on the SPAK file against him. On March 16, 1978, Aldo Moro was in Rome, in a blue Fiat. He was accompanied by carabinieri Domenico Ricci and Oreste Leonardi. Behind them was another vehicle with three other members of the escort. It was the day of the inauguration of the fourth Andreotti government: after years of negotiations, the executive led by the Christian Democrats won the confidence of the Communists.
At the time, the ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY (PCI) and the Christian Democrats were the main parties in the country. Winning the confidence of the communists was a historic and long-awaited achievement for the government. But that was not the most important event of the day. On "Fani" street in the capital, shortly after nine o'clock in the morning, two cars blocked the vehicle where Moro was with his escort. Four members of the Red Brigade, Valerio Morucci, Raffaele Fiore, Prospero Gallinari and Franco Bonisoli opened fire, killing the carabinieri escort. Moro, unharmed, was transferred to a car of the kidnappers.
An hour later, the Red Brigades sent a message to ANSA that they were the perpetrators of the kidnapping. The news spread quickly. Italy was shocked. Special editions on TV and radio announced what had happened. In Rome, shops closed their shutters and the city came to a standstill for a day. Meanwhile, the Parliament responded with quick and broad confidence to the new Andreotti government, which was born with a difficult task on its shoulders: to save Aldo Moro.
