Klevis Balliu, a DP MP, visited the President of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, in detention today. Balliu stated that despite Meta being in "top form", he is being denied some very important, even human, rights.
He said he was informed by Meta that for 18 months he has not even been allowed to meet his sick parents, while the cell where he is staying is the only one that does not have a signal to call for help.
Balliu said he intended to discuss several issues with Meta, but added that during the meeting he received clarifications from him regarding the situation he is in. He raised allegations about the conditions in the cell, emphasizing that, according to him, “the only cell where the signal to call the police does not work is Ilir Meta’s.”
The opposition MP also stated that the former president seeks opportunities to hold meetings with MPs from his political force, while adding a personal element, claiming that Meta has not met his sick parents for 18 months due to restrictions on visitation lists.
In his statement, Balliu said that Meta wants the court hearings to be public, so that, according to him, citizens can be directly informed about the charges. He also claimed that Meta's case is "unique" and that the former president has been in detention for nearly two years without a formal charge.
Balliu added that Meta follows public developments and, according to him, is "in good shape" and "clear about the situation."
" Today I was in prison '313' where I did an inspection and met Meta. I wanted to explain some things to him, but in the end he explained them to me. The only cell where the signal to call the police does not work is Ilir Meta's.
What Meta requires at the very least is to have meetings with his deputies. I can also say something personal, that he has not met sick parents for 18 months, because here everything is done with a limited list. The only thing he asks for is that the sessions be public so that citizens can hear where Ilir Meta has stolen a cent from the Albanian state. Meta's case is unique. Today this man remains there, in violation of the law.
"Meta has been in custody for almost 2 years without any charges. Meta has followed all the reactions, he is in top form. Meta is super clear about everything. A man who has committed crimes hides from the cameras ," said Balliu.
