Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha was alarmed by the summons of his son, Shkëlzen, to the SPAK to testify about Gërdec's file on former Minister Fatmir Mediu.
Berisha described SPAK as an irresponsible institution that has not performed its mission properly.
According to him, there are people in SPAK who received 200,000 euros to release the killers.
On the other hand, Berisha said that there can be no hesitation or obstacle to any investigation of justice, despite his subsequent statements about SPAK.
He added that even if they "investigate for 100 years" they will not find anything related to the case.
" Anytime, anyone. I have made it clear that there can never be any hesitation or hindrance to any kind of investigation. If I take positions and make denunciations, I do them for the public interest, not for other purposes. Even 100 years later, if they investigate you there, they will not find anything. I support law enforcement. But as you know there are criminals there. There are people who received 200 thousand euros and released the murderers. Can Ilir Beqaj be forgiven? How can it be forgiven? Where there is leakage, there is collaboration with crime. - said Berisha to the media.
Today, the Special Prosecutor's Office asked the Special Court against Organized Crime and Corruption to interrogate Shkëlzen Berisha as a witness in the trial against Fatmir Mediu for the Gërdec massacre of March 15, 2008.
The prosecution presented the request for trial as well as the list of 71 witnesses, whom it wants to call in court as witnesses and the request for the written evidence that it makes available.
The former Minister of Justice, Aldo Bumçi, has also been called to testify. The event that connects Aldo Bumçi with Shkëlzen Berisha, is a fax containing the content of the letter of approval from the Ministry of Justice for the contract to be concluded in Gërdec, a copy of which was privately sent to Shkëlzen Berisha from Aldo Bumçi's office. This is the evidence that shows who was interested in that business.
The testimony is supported by the former secretary of Aldo Bumçi, Anjola Agolli, given to the prosecutors, who admits that Shkëlzeni went to the office and then Aldo forwarded the order to Shkëlzeni's private office within the Ministry of Defense. The fax was seized by the Prosecutor's Office in the materials found after the tragedy at the Ministry of Defense.
The role of witnesses
According to the Criminal Code, persons who are called as witnesses in court have the obligation to tell everything they know in a truthful way, otherwise they risk punishment from a fine to two years in prison. However, refusal to testify is punishable by up to one year of imprisonment. The lawyers have also requested a re-examination on the cause of the explosion at the ammunition dismantling factory in Gërdec, hinting that the event may have been the result of a deliberate act. After reopening the investigations, SPAK accused Fatmir Mediu of abuse of office in the Gërdeci file, which was sent for trial in February of this year. The process was postponed for 7 months due to procedural requests from the lawyers of the former minister and the representatives of the victims.
