Prime Minister Edi Rama, in an interview published yesterday by " Politico ", stated that Albania is ready to make its airspace and airports available for the US to use in attacks on Iran, but on the condition that the US provide air defense for our country.
Meanwhile, today, less than 24 hours after that interview, Rama hosted a meeting with the US Ambassador to NATO, Matt Whitaker. Through a post on his social network "Facebook", Rama said that the meeting focused on the strategic partnership between Albania and the US and the strengthening of these relations.
Although there is nothing official, Whitaker's visit leaves open the possibility that the US may have expressed interest in Rama's proposal.
" At the Prime Minister's Office, with the US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, we spoke about the close connection between our countries, the strategic partnership between our states, our excellent diplomatic and military relations, the strengthening of which is a common priority, as well as about the NATO Summit next year in Tirana, where Albania will become the meeting point of the world's largest military alliance ," Rama writes.
However, although there is no statement about the 'door' that Rama opened to the US, this opportunity will most likely not remain out of American attention, given the fact that all EU countries and Britain have closed bases to President Donald Trump.
What further casts doubt is the fact that the US Ambassador to NATO also met with the Minister of Defense, Ermal Nufi, with whom they visited the Kuçova Air Base, renovated with NATO funds. The announcement distributed by the embassy speaks of Albania's transformation into a NATO logistics hub in the region.
“Flying over the Kuçova Air Base, renovated with NATO funds, United States Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker and Minister of Defense Ermal Nufi discussed Albania’s ability to become a NATO logistics hub in the region through investments in Corridor VIII, as well as ways Albania can take regional security to higher levels through increased defense spending ,” the US embassy announced.
It remains to be seen how events in the Middle East will unfold, with the US and Iran expected to meet in Islamabad today. If no agreement is reached, it may soon become clear whether Rama's proposal was discussed during today's meeting.
