The Assembly approved with 85 votes in favor, in Thursday's session, Endrit Shabani as the People's Advocate. Shabani entered the race for People's Advocate as a candidate with the supporting signatures of DP deputies, a moment that seems to have been used by the socialist majority to support him. The entire DP movement turned out to be a bluff in relation to Sali Berisha's public statements and has created another chaos in the largest opposition party.
And while Berisha apologizes, along with some of the signatory MPs, Gazment Bardhi, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Group, has chosen to accuse the Speaker of Parliament Niko Peleshi of falsifying parliamentary acts.
In a post on social media, Bardhi writes that "yesterday, Niko Peleshi presented to the Albanian Parliament for voting as a false candidate for Ombudsman a man who did not have the support of a single MP with a valid signature, let alone the 28 MPs as the law requires for voting."
Despite the fact that Shabani had managed to secure the signatures of 35 DP deputies, presenting himself as a candidate and also holding a hearing in the Laws Committee, Bardhi claims that "Peleshi, by abusing his office, fulfilled Edi Rama's sick ambition to seize every power, including the last constitutional institution that was not under the government's control."
"The Speaker of the Assembly has exceeded every limit, misusing the signatures of the deputies of the Assembly of Albania who had withdrawn from the proposal of the relevant draft decision. No one can use the signatures/proposals of the deputies of the Assembly of Albania against their will."
For this reason, today, I have immediately authorized the legal team of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group to prepare a criminal complaint for "abuse of office" and "falsification of parliamentary documents" in collaboration with the Speaker of the Assembly Niko Pelesh, and anyone else who has a role in this unprecedented act of the Assembly. Meanwhile, I will request from the parliamentary group the appropriate authorization to address the Constitutional Court to verify the election of the Ombudsman through a completely illegal parliamentary procedure.
The DP Parliamentary Group has been and remains determined that the election of constitutional bodies must be carried out according to a transparent, inclusive procedure that guarantees the independence of these institutions, as the European Commission's Progress Report underlines. Only in this way is Albania on the right path towards the European Union. Otherwise, it is proven that we have officially transitioned to a party-state! ", writes Bardhi.
