The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, today decreed the appointment of Gent Shala as a judge in the Supreme Court. The decision was published on December 12, 2025 and brings to an end a process that today takes on a clear political and institutional meaning.
Gentian Shala is the Appeals Court judge who signed the criminal decision that sent former Democratic Party MP Ervin Salianji to prison. The sentence was carried out and Salianji lost his freedom after a decision that was widely considered selective and political.
Today, just a short time after Salijanj's imprisonment, the same judge has risen to the top of the Albanian judicial system. This development reinforces the perception that sentencing political figures critical of the government is accompanied by career advancement for those who sign the decisions.
Gentian Shala's appointment comes despite the fact that during the re-evaluation process he has been subject to serious disputes over his wealth and professionalism. Suspicions of asset concealment have been raised, including claims of shares in construction companies and uninvestigated loan contracts, issues that were considered insufficient to prevent his confirmation in the system.
Despite these documented problems, the system chose to advance Shala, rewarding him with a seat on the Supreme Court. This is the clearest signal of how the new judicial hierarchy functions when faced with political opponents.
