The head of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, declared outside the Parliament that Albania's European integration process is entering an important phase, while tomorrow the interim milestone report is expected to be passed to the Committee of Representatives and the Intergovernmental Conference will be held next week.
Balla emphasized that Albania has been praised by Germany as a model for justice reform, the vetting process, and the fight against corruption and organized crime.
"More than 92 gaps were identified that needed to be addressed and 'Fundamentals' in the history of the EU are the ones that open first and close last, but in the case of Albania, I want to quote word for word the assessment from Germany, it is said that Albania, with its justice reform, vetting, fight against corruption and organized crime, is a model for other aspiring countries," declared Balla.
Regarding discussions on gradual membership in the European Union, he said that this does not pose a risk to Albania and that the objective of concluding negotiations by the end of 2027 remains unchanged.
"We should not fear that phased membership will harm us. On the contrary, it has nothing to do with us. Our ambition to conclude negotiations by the end of 2027 is in line with the agreed program," he said.
Balla explained that after the conclusion of negotiations, the process moves to the ratification phase by EU member states, a procedure that may require voting in parliaments or even referendums.
He also spoke about the opposition's involvement in the integration process, pledging political cooperation on this path.
"I will do everything so that the opposition has its own space. On June 17-18, the report will be approved in the EP. Maybe it would be good for us to be a joint delegation between the opposition and the majority on that day ," said Balla.
