Protest for Zvërnec, Tabaku: Edi Rama's mask was torn off, he used
Jorida Tabaku

Jorida Tabaku, a member of parliament from the Democratic Party, has reacted to the protest held the previous day in Tirana regarding Zvërnec, where the protesters were sprayed with water cannon and pepper spray by the Police, in an attempt to stop the march towards the Prime Minister's Office. Speaking in the Assembly, Tabaku said that many young people, citizens, people with or without a party, faced the violence of the Government, which the protesters of the Democratic Party have been facing for 12 years.

" I don't feel good when I see Albanian citizens facing this kind of violence, but in fact it also serves to expose a little the face of this propaganda and this arrogance that has reached its limits today. I will speak a little later about the issue of Zvërnec and Narta and about my position on a long battle of the Democratic Party, but today I want to raise and demand, both as the deputy chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Stabilization and Association, and at the same time as the chair of the Committee on Human Rights and the Media, transparency for the eighth intergovernmental conference between Albania and the European Commission.

We have no information about the closing obligations, we have no list of laws that will be discussed in parliament, we have absolutely no list of closing obligations for each of the chapters. The Democratic Party is not a number here in Parliament and you tell us 'this law is for integration, this law is not for integration and come on, approve it'.

We want a national debate on all the obligations and laws that will be passed here in Parliament. We want transparency, we support all the concerns of civil society, the 30 organizations that stood up yesterday for an open legal process, for laws that should not be made quickly, that should not be made badly.

On behalf of the Democratic Party, we have also established a working group in the Human Rights Commission to work on media laws, to give our contribution, but we want this process to be a national process, not a closed process, not a political process of the government, but an obligation that the entire Albanian society has. We have been committed to doing this for a long time, we have requested in all instances that this happen, and that what happened last September not be repeated. We have given our contribution to the changes to the Criminal Code and they were not taken into account, you have an obligation there in IBAR.

We have given our contribution to many other laws that have not been taken into account, you have obligations there in IBAR. This must be an inclusive process. In the first chapter group, which is the responsibility of the commission that I lead, we have requested that at the first moment we open a public debate, for the media first, but also for other human rights issues. Secondly, we have invited the organization Reporters Without Borders, who will come and report to parliament next week. I understand that the Prime Minister of Albania wants them to have a debate with him, but they will have the debate in parliament on June 22. Anyone who is interested in taking part, let them come... ", she said.
