In an unusual evening, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama presented thirteen of his drawings at the Italian Embassy in Berlin, exhibited at the diplomatic mission, on the occasion of his personal exhibition "Chrysalization".
In an unusual evening in Berlin, the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, appeared in the role of the artist, presenting thirteen of his drawings at the Italian Embassy.
The works were exhibited at the diplomatic mission premises, as part of the personal exhibition "Chrysalizing", currently open at the Société gallery, where visitors can also see his sculptures.
The activity took the form of a public conversation, where Italian Ambassador Fabrizio Bucci interviewed the Prime Minister/artist. During the discussion, Rama shared a series of anecdotes with ironic tones, also recalling his past as a basketball player.
"I am the best artist in the world among prime ministers and the best prime minister among artists!" he said humorously.
Rama then addressed political issues, focusing particularly on the European Union.
“The EU is a blessing for us; its role is very useful for institution building and it knows how to do that. It is the most neurotic process possible, but it works. Thanks to it, we have changed,” he declared.
The Prime Minister also stressed that the European Union has "changed its fundamental position" following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"Before, they used the right words, but the actions did not follow. When the invasion happened, they realized that all those outside the bloc could lose," Rama said.
However, he called for further acceleration of the European process, describing the current method as slow and full of obstacles.
"We have to do what we have to do. And we will move forward because that's how we get better," he said.
In an ironic tone he then added: "The good news is that we will never become a Germany, because we are not capable of that. But a 'little Italy'?"
During the conversation with Ambassador Bucci, Rama also recalled his period as a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana and as mayor of Tirana from 2000 to 2011. He focused on the urban transformation of the capital and the evolution of Albanian society.
According to him, a society that was initially driven by “hunger” and “personal interests” in the private sphere has gradually developed an interest in public space. These processes, according to Rama, are reflected in his art through the transformation of forms, as well as in his work as mayor in the transformation of Tirana.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Société gallery, as part of the “Gallery Weekend Berlin”. The Italian Embassy also supported the participation of the “Olevano Romano Marching Band”, which is part of a work by the German artist Annika Khars, currently exhibited at the Hamburger Bahnhof museum in Berlin.
