Mereme Sela, who applied today to be a candidate for the Democratic Party's presidency in the May 23 elections, stated that she was pushed to enter this race as a result of the great contribution she claims to have made to the community, mainly in the field of medicine (as she is a doctor by profession).
Sela made the comments on the 'Frontline' show on Report TV, where he said that he met all the criteria to be part of the race for the leadership of the Democratic Party.
Sela also added that he had been part of the 2025 Democratic Party primaries, while criticizing this process, stating that at that time the party was almost non-existent.
" I am 58 years old and have a 37-year career in medicine. Looking at a nation, the 3 main pillars, health, education, economy, to have a family and children, these are the main foundations of the program that I have prepared, which I will present after the candidacy is formalized. These are the basic reasons that have pushed me to be a candidate for president of the DPSH. I have been a member of the DP since 2014. I meet all the criteria shown. The criterion of political contribution in politics and social and community life, I meet best. I have not held high positions in the political leadership of the DP, since the entire community of Durrës, Kruja, Fushë-Kruja, know the contribution that I have to the entire community in medicine. I have not been given leadership positions. In the 2025 primaries, I was one of the candidates and I was not very satisfied. It was something that the membership did not know and the lists of the membership were not present. At least I am talking about the Kruja district, it was a non-existent DP. I have expressed all my concerns, but I have not had any contact even to cooperate for the good of the party, the citizens and the community. Being a new spirit in the leadership, a new spirit that has a positive impact on the entire community of the district, for the hospital center, for Fushë-Kruja and Kruja, but absolutely, especially after the Covid 19 pandemic, the health service of doctors was beyond the limit. These are the reasons that pushed me. I think that being a woman, with years of career, as well as knowing everything that is lame in these 3 main pillars, I think I am the right person , "said Sela, among other things.
When asked if the race was rigged to favor Sali Berisha, Mereme Sela said she had no criticism and did not want to fight anyone. She added that she was a smiling and peaceful person by nature.
" Since there are rumors that a new figure is needed, without problems with anyone and with a positive impact, I think I am the right one. I have respect for the doctor, I had a professor. I am only consumed with public health for the people, but I am not consumed with political life. I heard that a student is running with the professor. I found out about the application yesterday, about the criteria. I made all the necessary documents and submitted them. I am a smiling and peaceful person, I am not one to fight with anyone. Skanderbeg fought the war, the work is finished ", continued Sela.
Asked if she would make Sali Berisha a minister or deputy minister if she becomes prime minister, she said: " If I become the leader of the DP, it is definitely my turn to be the prime minister as well. I think it will be a novelty for Albania as well. But ministers and deputies, we are talking about a new spirit. There are definitely new figures, with all due respect to the doctor, to the professor ."
