Former Democratic MP Ervin Salianji has exploded with strong accusations against Sali Berisha and the process for electing the leader of the Democratic Party, declaring that he will not recognize Berisha as the legitimate leader of the opposition.
In a reaction to "Deutsche Welle", Salianji described the process as a formal vote without real competition and accused Berisha of holding the Democratic Party hostage.
" When there is no competition, there is also a lack of moral legitimacy, but in this case, legal legitimacy. Democrats do not need formal elections without alternatives, but an open, modern and winning opposition. What happened today does not unite Democrats, on the contrary, it distances them even more from politics and from trust in the opposition. I did not enter this battle for personal interests or positions. I entered because I believe that Albania needs a real opposition and the restoration of democratic standards ," declared Salianji.
The former MP warned that he will continue his political action and meetings with the Democrats, while emphasizing that he does not recognize the outcome of the process organized by Berisha.
" My political action will continue with the same determination, alongside the democrats and citizens who demand real change and not recycling of the past. I will continue the movement and meetings with citizens starting this week in Tirana. We do not recognize a farce organized by Berisha. He spoke as a commissioner, as a teller, as a judge, as the possessor of absolute truth... practically as an owner. We will not accept and do not recognize Sali Berisha as legitimate ," he said.
Salianji went even further in his criticism of the historic leader of the Democrats, stating that every day that Berisha remains at the head of the DP only serves to extend Edi Rama's power.
" Every day of his stay in office serves to extend Edi Rama's power. Albanians today are looking for an alternative, not a repetition of the old political crisis, nor a recycling or repackaging of Berisha as the unproven young man who will bring hope. The opposition becomes stronger when it opens up to society, when it accepts competition, meritocracy and different opinions. Without these elements, there can be no civic trust nor a winning alternative to the government ," declared the former Democrat MP.
At the end of his reaction, Salianji compared Berisha to Prime Minister Edi Rama, describing him as a politically exhausted figure with no real alternative to power.
" Sali Berisha brings pessimism to the opposition and the entire society. He has no narrative as to why he wants to come to power, no public reason other than personal desire. Berisha is as worn out as Rama, has accusations like Rama, has bad relations with the international factor and has been a chronic loser since 2013 when he was in government. The only new thing is that now the masks of 'democracy' have fallen and he has been exposed as an underminer of democracy ," concluded Salianji.
