The Minister of National Defense of Greece, Nikos Dendias, has reacted publicly after his official visit to Tirana, where he held meetings with Prime Minister Edi Rama and his Albanian counterpart, Ermal Nufi.
Through a post on the social network "X", Dendias announced that during the meeting with Prime Minister Rama, the geopolitical situation in the region was discussed, as well as the strengthening of relations between Albania and Greece.
" I was received by the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, as part of my visit to Tirana. We analyzed the broader geopolitical situation in our region ," the Greek minister wrote.
In his statement, Dendias also stopped at Himara, emphasizing the personal connection he claims to the area, as well as the role of the Greek minority in relations between the two countries.
" I had the opportunity to speak about Himara, where I consider my early origins, and to reiterate my position that the Greek Ethnic Minority is a bridge of friendship between the two states and peoples ," he declared.
In parallel, the Greek minister also commented on the meeting with the Albanian Minister of Defense, Ermal Nufi, where according to him the parties agreed on the immediate meeting of the Joint Commission of Experts on Military Cemeteries.
" During the meeting with my Albanian counterpart, Ermal Nufi, we agreed on the immediate convening of the Joint Commission of Experts on Military Cemeteries ," Dendias said.
According to him, the talks focused on strengthening cooperation in the field of defense, within NATO, as well as on issues related to the management and maintenance of the cemeteries of Greek soldiers on Albanian territory.
The issue of military cemeteries remains one of the most sensitive topics in relations between Athens and Tirana, while Dendias' statements on Himara and the Greek minority are expected to reignite political debates in both countries.
