"The issue is not an individual candidacy, but the defense of democratic standards, internal pluralism and the institutional credibility of the largest opposition party in Albania"
Ervin Salianji, who was not allowed to run for the leadership of the Democratic Party in the May 23 election, where Sali Berisha is running alone, has informed the European People's Party (EPP) about the situation in the DP and the way in which Sali Berisha is holding this political force hostage.
In the letter addressed to the President of the EPP, Manfred Weber, as well as the leaders of the main European center-right parties that are part of the EPP, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Salianji expresses concern regarding recent developments in the Democratic Party of Albania and the violation of democratic standards of its functioning.
Berisha and the DP leadership consider the exclusion of Salianji from the race for the leadership of the DP legitimate, justifying the exclusion as a procedure related to the "violation of red lines" by the former MP. For Berisha, Salianji has collaborated with criminal elements, while the former MP has returned the "rest" to the democratic leader, reminding him of the "non gratas", where one of the arguments used by the United Kingdom is precisely his connections with organized crime.
Salianji raises concerns about the blocking of the Democratic Party's presidential race, the disregard for the party's statute, the arbitrary exclusion of members and candidates, the lack of transparency, and the violation of the basic rules of political pluralism.
"The issue is not an individual candidacy, but the defense of democratic standards, internal pluralism and the institutional credibility of the largest opposition party in Albania," Salianji states in his letter.
He further emphasizes that the Democratic Party, as part of the European political family, should be a model of internal democracy and not a symbol of closure, exclusion and personal interests. Salianji emphasizes that in the race for the leadership of the DP, candidacies were effectively obstructed, while the office responsible for submitting documentation did not function within the deadline.
Salianji also emphasizes that supporters and candidates were expelled without formal decisions and without statutory arguments, just as the article of the statute that provides for the resignation of the president after losing the parliamentary elections was not respected.
Salianji demands from the EPP and the leaders of European right-wing parties a principled and constructive commitment to encourage dialogue, respect for statutory norms and the preservation of democratic standards within the Democratic Party of Albania.
He reiterates at the end of the letter his commitment to European values, democracy, the rule of law, pluralism and Albania's European integration.
The letter from Salijanj, the former DP MP, who is considered by Sali Berisha to have self-excluded himself from the Democratic Party, follows that of Alesia Balliu, who was not allowed to run for the leadership of the largest opposition party. Balliu addressed the Diplomatic Corps in Tirana, as well as some of the main European chancelleries, regarding what is happening in the Democratic Party, while accusing Sali Berisha of usurping the DP. /Pamphlet/
