Former Minister of Justice, Enkelejd Alibeaj, said that criminal justice is the only effective means to crack down on a political class steeped in corruption and ties to organized crime. He described SPAK as the “strong recipe” that the Albanian political system has been lacking for years.
Alibeaj opposed the thesis that political class change can only come through political means, emphasizing that these mechanisms have failed.
"I am convinced that for a political class steeped in corruption and in alliance with organized crime, the most appropriate remedy is justice. Not to change politics, but to strike at those who abuse power," Alibeaj told "A2 CNN."
Responding to critics who speak of a "republic of prosecutors" or "overdose of justice", the former minister said that what is happening today is simply normality in a state of law.
"It is not a republic of prosecutors nor an overdose of drugs. Albanian society is simply not used to the untouchables of politics going to the prosecutor's office. This is normality in a state governed by law ," he stressed.
Alibeaj pointed out that the increasingly frequent visits to SPAK's doors by politicians is a sign of the functioning of justice and not of a crisis.
"Those who have the potential to fall into corruption, abuse of power or connections to organized crime must be held accountable like any other citizen of the Republic ," he said.
According to Alibeaj, Albania is still suffering from an inherited mentality, where the powerful were considered above the law, while today this perception is being broken.
"This is a symptom of a rule of law and a fragile democracy that is building its European foundations," he added.
In his analysis, Alibeaj said that political means have failed to bring about a rotation of power and moral punishment through elections.
"Political tools have failed. They are no longer producing rotation, nor moral-political punishment. This medicine seems to have expired," Alibeaj also said.
The former Minister of Justice described criminal justice as a necessary impetus for shaking up the current political class.
"This strong prescription for justice must create the conviction that no one enters politics with the idea of turning power into loot and throwing it away without getting wet," Alibeaj concluded.
