Spain and Germany reject Melon for immigrants: There is no Italian-Albanian
EU leaders reject Albania's scheme for immigrants

"There is no Italian-Albanian model" is the laconic comment at the Elysee in function of the EU Council in Brussels that threatens to divide precisely on the issue of immigration.

Emmanuel Macron is slowing down the project, with which Giorgia Meloni wants to impress.

The irritation goes to the meeting organized today by the prime minister on the sidelines of the EU summit with the Netherlands, Denmark, possibly Poland and Germany to discuss immigration.

"It doesn't make sense to organize discussions in separate groups", observe the French in the presidential palace.

The head of state was not consulted about the meeting requested by Meloni and if there were no bilateral contacts in the following hours, he did not plan to participate.

Macron has repeatedly ruled out the "Rwanda solution" in the past, in reference to the former British government's failed plan to transfer migrants to Rwanda.

And now the Italian initiative in Albania is rejected, which presents obvious humanitarian and legal problems.

"France wants to remain within the rules of international law and within our constitutional framework for access to asylum," continues the Elysée.

A European diplomatic source describes the new Italian center in Albania as an "unrealistic move", which over time will turn out not to work.

Meanwhile, however, Meloni has arrived in Brussels looking to be the leader of tougher governments, at a time when Germany has reintroduced border controls and Poland is threatening to suspend the right to asylum.

The wind blowing to the right in the EU is also affecting Michel Barnier's government.

The new prime minister attended a meeting of the EPP in Brussels, his political family.

To sign the agreement, Barnier will go to Menton tomorrow with the new interior minister, Bruno Retailleau.

Ministers Antonio Tajani and Matteo Piantedosi will be in the border town. A symbolic moment after years of crisis and tensions between the two governments.

The previous interior minister, Gérald Darmanin, had accused Meloni of only making propaganda and of not knowing how to manage migratory flows.

Now the music has changed. And France will speak with two almost opposite results, that of Macron and that of Barnier./ La Repubblica
