Jorida Tabaku

Democrat Jorida Tabaku, Chairwoman of the Committee on Human Rights and Public Media, has reacted to the statements of Commissioner Marta Kos about corruption in Albania.

According to Tabaku, corruption is a culture of socialists, not Albanians.

"Even in Brussels where the commissioner is today, corruption is not a cultural issue, it is a system issue. Deputy Prime Minister after Deputy Prime Minister who comes there is unfortunately involved in corruption. Of the 61 municipalities you have today, more than half have been investigated or convicted for corruption. This is not a cultural issue. Ah, yes, it is a cultural issue of the socialists, the way they operate, not of the Albanians," Tabaku emphasized.

She states that the assessment of the steps of the negotiations with the European Union depends on the position of the majority.

"The reputation of SPAK has been damaged, with Parliament refusing to lift the former deputy prime minister's immunity, but on the other hand, there has been an offensive rhetoric from the government towards justice institutions, treating justice as good for the opponent, but not for him. Member states are taking their time, making sure that the report first reflects the situation here on the ground," said Tabaku.

She estimates that the target for 2027 is uncertain.

"This process is not a power point presentation process, about how beautifully we speak English in Brussels, but this process is a process of reforms implemented here. So, for me 2027 was in question months ago, now it is being questioned even by the EC."

Regarding the integration process, Tabaku emphasizes that the obstacles are related to government decision-making.

"The IBAR report was blocked today because the deputy prime minister's immunity was not granted. The government's proposals to amend the criminal procedure code to grant themselves immunity from future corruption investigations are an obstacle. These were not said by the opposition in Albanian, English, or German, these were said with clear positions by the member states. The evil of this country is not the opposition. Those who are obstructing the integration process today are sitting there in the government and are clearly showing that political will is lacking," she told A2CNN.

Finally, Tabaku criticizes the idea of linking the integration process with other countries in the region. "Albania cannot link the integration process with Serbia. The future of Albania is inevitably linked to Kosovo first and second, we were in the same situation with Montenegro a few months ago."
