The former Minister of Defense Fatmir Mediu spoke about the Gërdec tragedy for which the GJKKO was charged, justifying that there was no intervention in the matter of dismantling the cartridges.
Mediu said that he acted on the basis of VKM and the proposal of the General Staff of the Army.
"When I became Minister of Defense, I was in 2005. The surplus ammunition came out in 2002. The task was to burn and destroy and sell the ammunition. I respected the opinion of the military that these were surplus ammunition and VKM. 'VKM' 138 defined these ratios sales for military purposes, sales for non-military purposes. The evaluation process of the company has passed all its links and has been done for a year and a half. The contract was signed in June 2007", explained Mediu.
"In the first contract with cartridges made by this company, 1.6 million euros were earned. 4 tons of cartridges were dismantled. Military plants are not dependent on the army, but public enterprises. Funding to the Ministry of Defense has been greatly reduced at that time. I had a task as Minister of Defense, that dismantling had to be done. I am not accused of corruption. I am accused of abuse of office. The Ministry of Defense operates with two structures, military structures and civilian structures. The minister is in the civil structure. As a minister, I have respected the opinion of the experts. The Minister of Defense has made a note to proceed according to the request of the General Staff", said Mediu in an interview for Report TV.
