"Trump plays a big role in the elections in Albania", Rama: I am

When Trump said that God saved Trump to make America great again, he only told half the story. The other half is that He saved Trump also to make Europe wake up and take action.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama praised Donald Trump as “good for everyone,” portraying the President’s harsh treatment of US allies as an opportunity for a European Union that has lost its way to rediscover its power and build its global influence.

Rama's comments, made in an interview in the country's capital, Tirana, are striking not only because he is a socialist who has invested his legacy in leading Albania into the EU by 2030 if he wins next month's parliamentary elections.

They also reflect a campaign in which Trump and his world are playing a surprisingly large role.

In an interview with American media, the SP leader stated that the bloc has become "too self-referential" and "egotistical" and must learn to stand up to other powers - at a time of US-instigated trade wars and global divisions.

"When Trump said that God saved Trump to make America great again, he only told half the story. The other half is that He saved Trump also to make Europe wake up and take action," said Prime Minister Rama, at the Socialist Party headquarters in Tirana.

In Albania, Rama is facing a challenge in the May 11 elections from the center-right Democratic Party led by Sali Berisha, a former president and prime minister.

Sanctioned by the US for suspected corruption, Berisha has spoken with Chris LaCivita, Trump's former presidential campaign co-manager, to advise him on his party's bid for victory in the May 11 vote.

One line of attack directed at Rama is about his ties to Alexander Soros, the son of the billionaire investor whom the prime minister considers a friend.

LaCivita posted a photo of the two on X in February with the caption, "The puppet and the puppet master."

The Prime Minister has expanded his contact with Trump's inner circle.

Earlier this year, Jared Kushner, the US president's son-in-law and adviser during his first term, won preliminary approval from the Albanian government for a $1.4 billion luxury resort on a former military base.

The green light for the project on Sazan Island off the southern coast of Albania, near where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet, came a few days before Trump took office in January.

This will be one of Kushner's largest planned projects in the Balkans, which includes a planned Trump hotel in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.

Rama, an artist and former basketball player, said his government's approval of the project was not an attempt to take advantage of the US president.

"Kushner visited the island for the first time in 2021 along with his wife, Ivanka Trump, and special envoy, Grenell. At the time, it was not something that would give us political points in Washington. There were others in power and it was not at all clear that Trump could win. Albanian authorities are in the "discussion process" with Kushner's team and the deal has not been finalized.

It's not that we gave the island away and this is a partnership. It could be faster, it could be slower, but both sides have to agree. They have our full support, but we have to agree. I am privileged to speak with Kushner and I would be very happy to call him a friend. I don't know if he calls me a friend, but I call him a friend," Rama declared.
