A day after allegations published in the media, claiming that the European Union ambassador in Tirana had interfered in the OSCE-ODIHR preliminary report to remove names of persons involved in electoral crimes, including underworld figures and police officials, Silvio Gonzato held a meeting with Chief Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi.
After the meeting, Ambassador Gonzato reacted publicly by categorically denying the accusations and underlining that the EU has not had and will not have any interference in the electoral process.
"The European Union neither interferes nor manipulates. The news that we have interfered in the ODIHR report is completely untrue. ODIHR is an independent organization and acts independently; we cannot interfere in their reports. We trust ODIHR, which is responsible for monitoring the process," Gonzato declared.
Gonzato emphasized that the EU's role is to assist Albania in the integration process, explaining that they are here to help Albania, not to manipulate.
He also praised the work of SPAK, emphasizing that the fight against organized crime is an important part of Albania's integration process into the European Union.
