The Movement for National Development has returned to its long-standing proposal to sanction the death penalty for serious crimes against life.

In a statement to the media, the co-chair of the LZHK, Ekrem Spahia, while condemning the murder of judge Astrit Kalaja, stated that a solution must also be found for the property problem, writes A2.

"We express our deepest condolences to the family of Judge Astrit Kalaja. The Movement for National Development demands that state institutions, which are related to the issue of the property of the family of the person, who according to him, lost his temper and committed the murder, be held legally responsible for the 3-decade delay of the issue of the Shkambi family's properties," said Spahia.

"The LZHK has long suggested reviewing and toughening criminal sanctions, including temporarily imposing the death penalty for very serious crimes against life," Spahia added.

Meanwhile, tributes were held today in honor of the judge, who was killed by a 30-year-old in the courtroom on October 6, 2025. The tributes in honor of Judge Astrit Kalaja were attended by his colleagues, but also politicians, such as the President of the Republic Bajram Begaj, Prime Minister Edi Rama, and opposition figures.

Yesterday, private tributes were paid to the judge, while today he was given his final farewell at the Palace of Congresses.

He will be laid to rest in his hometown, Shkodra.
