Salih Mustafa's father, former KLA leader, was buried this Friday in Kosovo. Jahja Mustafa passed away on Thursday, while his son, Salih Mustafa, was denied permission to attend the funeral.
His absence from his father's funeral has further aggravated the pain of his family, friends and comrades. The head of the OVL-UÇK, Hysni Gucati, during his speech at the funeral ceremony, harshly criticized the Specialist Chambers in The Hague for not granting Mustafa permission to meet his father.
"I know that Cali will find strength in the midst of pain. We know that this court is very harmful to the country, and this court should have allowed Cali to come for a humanitarian visit 5 days ago, we have made a request and Cali's defense has made a request to release Cali so that he can at least come and visit his father while he was alive in the hospital and the opposite happened.
Today they did not release him and I thought that at least today they would release him for the funeral, because Cali was sentenced to 15 years in prison unjustly, convicted with a false and falsified witness. ..... We do not expect anything from this government, this government is a disgrace to the Albanians that is in power", said Gucati.
Mustafa is serving a 15-year prison sentence by the Specialist Chambers in The Hague. After his father's death, family members and fellow fighters have reacted strongly to the denial of his humanitarian visit and participation in the funeral, describing this as injustice and a lack of human sensitivity.
Mustafa was a commander of a unit within the Kosovo Liberation Army's Llapi Operational Zone. He was initially sentenced in December 2022 for war crimes to 26 years in prison.
In December 2023, the Special Appeal reduced his sentence to 22 years in prison, before a panel of the Panel Court sentenced him a year later to a combined sentence of 15 years in prison, taking into account time spent in detention.
