The US ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, has warned of consequences for Kosovo, in the event that Prime Minister Albin Kurti does not listen to the demands of the US on various issues.
"To the extent that the government is responsible for things that we believe are important and that we believe advance Kosovo's European and Euro-Atlantic trajectory, our partnership increases. To the extent that the government does not respond, this affects the quality of our partnership", stated Hovenier on RTV 21.
The American ambassador has said that they do not see that the Government is responding to many of their requests.
"It is not wrong to say that we are concerned and we would like to see greater accountability to our demands than what we are seeing at this time", he said.
Hovenier said that the election process in the northern municipalities is going very slowly. He says they won't have the patience to wait too long.
"I know that we are at the end of an important step, which is that the petitions have been signed, there are indications that more than 20 percent of the registered voters with the right to vote have signed these petitions, but only the Central Commission of Elections can confirm this. But once that happens, it is quite important that the authorities do everything possible to ensure that the next step happens without delay. And we will not be very patient. The next step must take place within the anticipated deadline, which I think is 45 days," Hovenier declared.
He said that the Kurti Government is being asked by Washington to postpone this decision.
"Our request is very clear. We are asking the government, not only me, there are also requests from Washington, but also my QUINT colleagues have this view, that the government should postpone the implementation of the Central Bank's regulation for now", he said. Hovenier.
He said that they are asking for this because the preparatory work must be done so that the minority communities do not have a negative impact.
