The Albanian-American community requires firm support from the US for Kosovo

Representatives of the Albanian-American community in the United States have asked Washington to unreservedly support Kosovo, saying that it is implementing the rules of the rule of law against Serbia's interference in its internal affairs. The letter sent to the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, comes at a time when the American and Kosovo governments have publicly expressed their differences regarding the recent tensions in the north, something unusual during the relations between the two countries.

One of the drafters of the letter, activist Drilon Gashi, told the Voice of America in an interview that the impetus for the letter was the concern that recently American pressure has been one-sided against Kosovo.

" The letter calls for a change in the current policy approach of the United States for the Balkans and for more support for states like Kosovo and other states that are more democratic, more supportive of foreign policies and not to the attempt to bring Serbia closer has consequences for other friends of the USA in the region and in particular for Kosovo ", says Mr. Gashi.

Mr. Gashi says that in the letter drawn up by him and Besnik Pula and signed by 70 people, "greater support for Kosovo in the extension of sovereignty and in the implementation of the results of the local elections there, regardless of the elected persons, despite the truncated legitimacy .”

" We have seen that earlier there was support for the election result, but then there was no support for this implementation ," he said.

The USA and the EU have called for new elections in the northern municipalities and asked the Kosovo government not to send the presidents elected with a low number of votes after the boycott by the Serbian parties, to the municipal buildings.

Senior American officials, including special envoy Gabriel Escobar, have criticized Prime Minister Albin Kurti for lack of flexibility and cooperation.

Mr. Gashi admits that the government of Kosovo should have coordinated better with the USA and that "insisting on the law is important, but implementation is done with that kind of coordination".

" If we follow the developments step by step, it was the groups related to President Vucic and his regime that took the step of violence. If these cases pass without being criticized with the tone that should be criticized, Serbia will only become braver against Kosovo, against other countries (in the region) ", he says/

Mr. Gashi adds that the letter was centered on the American reaction and the perception of bias from it and is an attempt by Albanian-Americans to influence the executive and Congress in the USA.

" After the Ohrid Agreement and the implementation plan, an agreement that in my opinion was positive, took the relations of the two countries further, allowed Kosovo to really enjoy de facto recognition from Serbia, so from the agreement we see that there is a lot objections that Serbia makes to that agreement for Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe, in other points ", says Mr. Gashi.

He adds that the insistence of the USA and the EU on the Association of Municipalities with a Serbian Majority is right.

Diplomats have warned of consequences for Pristina and Belgrade if they do not take steps to de-escalate the situation in the north of Kosovo, open the possibility of holding new elections and return to the negotiating table./ VOA
