The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that Kosovo stands behind the values of the United States of America and the European Union, however, he said that the way to calm the situation in the four northern municipalities should start with the removal of what he called the criminal gangs there.
" The way forward for pacification and normalization means the immediate stop of violence by criminal gangs in front of municipal facilities against police officers, NATO soldiers, journalists and mayors," declared Kurti .
Kurti said that the presence of the police in the north could be reduced in a proper way only if, as he said, the criminal gangs from the north leave and the people who caused violence are arrested.
Prime Minister Kurti called on the international community to work towards the intensification of the dialogue for the implementation of the agreements of February 27 reached in Brussels and the one of March 18, agreed in Ohrid, North Macedonia.
"We need a balanced and fair sequencing of the implementation of the basic agreement. The agreement has not only been accepted by both countries, Kosovo and Serbia, but it is also part of the conclusions of the European Council dated February 9, 2023", emphasized Kurti.
Referring to the tensions in the north, Kurti said that until the early elections in the northern municipalities, the current mayors should exercise their duties, while he called on the Serbs to participate in the elections.
Kurti further said that the municipal facilities are owned by Kosovo and that it will not be allowed to transform them into facilities owned by a certain ethnic group.
As for the violence caused by protesters in recent weeks in the north, Kurti said that it originates and is ordered by Belgrade.
Prime Minister Kurti made these comments on Sunday at the meeting of the General Council of the Vetëvendosje Movement.
It has been two weeks since groups of Serbs have been protesting in front of municipal facilities in four northern municipalities in opposition to the entry of Albanian mayors into these facilities.
The protests became tense from time to time until on May 29, 30 KFOR members were injured, who were calming the situation on the ground. Three soldiers were wounded by gunfire from the protesters.
