United States President Donald Trump has once again turned his attention to the Western Balkans, mainly towards Kosovo and Serbia. In a press conference held today, Trump once again recalled the agreement reached between Kosovo and Serbia during his first term as president.
Trump said that Serbia and Kosovo were about to clash in a major war, but added that he intervened by telling them that if they made a deal, they would no longer trade with the United States.
"Serbia and Kosovo were about to collide. They were heading for a big war. I told them: If you collide, there's no more trade with the United States. They said: Maybe we won't collide ," Trump said.
He added to reporters that he had done a lot of work during those weeks, emphasizing that tensions between the two countries were at a critical point and that his intervention was decisive. He further said that this situation also happened with India and Pakistan, saying that the threat of economic isolation worked there too.
"The same thing happened with India and Pakistan, which were heading towards a nuclear conflict. I was negotiating with both sides and I said to my aides: Cancel all trade agreements with India and Pakistan. They called me: 'What do we do?' I said: If you want to trade with the United States, great. If you want to use nuclear weapons, then no. And both sides agreed ," the US president added.
Trump stressed that his diplomatic efforts are often underrated, saying he doesn't know if there has ever been a president who has done more. He also mentioned a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the Iran issue.
"Putin called me and said, 'I would really like to help you with Iran.' I said, 'Do me a favor. I'll solve Iran. Help me with Russia. We have to solve this issue. And I believe there will be movement,'" Trump concluded.
Just a few days ago, Trump reiterated that he stopped the "conflict" between Kosovo and Serbia with the Washington Agreement, which was signed in September 2020 at the White House.
