The former Foreign Minister of Kosovo and at the same time the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Enver Hoxhaj, invited to "This Week", spoke about Kosovo's path towards membership in the Council of Europe.
Hoxhaj said that Kosovo meets all the criteria for membership, emphasizing that even though it is the youngest country, it claims to be the most consolidated democracy in the region.
He added that the member states have reflected their positions with the votes given in the KiE Parliamentary Assembly, although he said that there are efforts to make membership conditional on the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority.
According to him, the next step for Kosovo, if it joins the Council of Europe, should be NATO.
"Kosovo meets all the criteria. We are the largest country but we claim to be the most consolidated democracy in the region. We meet all the standards that a country needs to be in the KiE. After NATO and the EU, the Council of Europe is the third most important organization in Europe. For Kosovo, it would be a new seal of its citizenship as a European country, and this membership would be very important.
The member states have reflected their positions with the votes given in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. I am hearing that there is an attempt to make membership conditional upon the establishment of the Association as a final pre-condition. I think it is something unfair that is done to Kosovo knowing that it fulfills the criteria.
This is a way how big countries make policies in relation to other countries like Kosovo. It is a common practice. After this great geopolitical change, the next step should be NATO", said Hoxhaj.
