The head of the "European Initiative for Stability" institute, Gerald Knaus, has stated that some member states of the Council of Europe are preparing to block the vote for Kosovo's admission to the Committee of Ministers. He emphasized that two of the countries that are preparing to block Kosovo are France and Germany.
"Currently several member governments of the Council of Europe, including Germany and France, are preparing to block a vote on Kosovo's admission in May, ignoring the strong recommendation of its Parliamentary Assembly (APKiE) in April," he said.
The leaders of France and Germany themselves, President Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have called the Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti to condition membership in the Council of Europe with concrete and urgent steps towards the establishment of the Association.
Knaus also says this decision follows a campaign by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, including a personal appeal to French President Macron not to allow the vote.
He also mentions Serbia's commitment to purchase 12 French Rafale fighter jets.
"On its 75th anniversary, the Council of Europe is divided on a fundamental issue: do legal evaluations and votes in APKiE matter? Is membership on merit or is it just political?”, asks Knaus.
