Kosovo very close to forming new government, Albin Kurti: Ready for coalition

The political deadlock in Kosovo appears to be coming to an end. The leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, who is also the acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that his party is ready to co-govern with Fatmir Limaj's Social Democratic Initiative, to which party he said he has made a concrete offer.

"We held a meeting with Limaj the day before yesterday. LVV and I have expressed our interest and readiness to co-govern with the Social Democratic Initiative and in accordance with this, I have also made a concrete offer for everything to be concluded as soon as possible, so that we can have the constitution of the Assembly and the Government,"  Kurti said during a press conference at the Kosovo Government.

Kurti said he could not provide details as this offer has not yet been concretized in the agreement, stressing that talks need to continue in order to create the new institutions. He also said he hopes that talks with Limaj's party will be finalized this week.

"This weekend we will have news about the agreement reached or the lack thereof ," he said.

On July 21, MPs failed for the 50th time to constitute the Kosovo Assembly, as parties that were in opposition the previous term are opposing the change in the voting method for the speaker of parliament from open to closed.
Kurti and Limaj met over the weekend in an attempt to find a solution to unblock the situation. Before the meeting, exponents of the Social Democratic Initiative declared that they want Limaj to be elected speaker of parliament, in exchange for voting for the new Kosovo Government, led by Kurti’s party.
