The President of the Specialized Chambers, Ekaterina Trendafilova, has said that the Special Court can also consider life imprisonment sentences.
"The court can also consider sentences of life imprisonment. Judges rely on the Criminal Code of Kosovo and can take it into consideration", said Trendafilova during a discussion in Pristina.
Trendafilova's visit was followed by protests where six PSD activists were arrested.
Regarding the decision taken to suspend the visits of the former leaders of the KLA, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, Trendafilova said that the meetings of the accused with the defense teams cannot be limited.
"It is essential that the meetings with the defense teams cannot be limited at all. It is a free meeting and without any kind of monitoring. This is the sacred relationship between the client and the defense," said Trendafilova.
Trendafilova added that until now the judges of the Special Court have not been subject to any political influence or pressure.
"Until now, it has not happened that anyone dares to put pressure on anyone, neither on me nor on my colleagues. This is attributed to the institutions of Kosovo and the member states of the EU, which have established this institution. There was never any pressure and there never will be," she said.
"The court psychologist works with the witnesses, in what we call 'familiarization', which means, he sends them to the courtroom, they explain the whole procedure how it will happen. You will sit here, they will ask you, you have to answer and so on. If you feel uncomfortable, just let us know. There were witnesses who wanted to be protected from visual contact with some of the accused", she said while being asked about the 29th witness.
