"The government has failed", Haziri: Kosovo lost two moments to force

The vice-president of the opposition party in Kosovo, the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lutfi Haziri criticizes the Government of Kosovo for having lost two moments created by the war in Ukraine and Israel's conflict in Gaza to end the problem of its status with Serbia.

In an interview for the Voice of America in Washington, Mr. Haziri says that Prime Minister Albin Kurti's government has created daily crises for Kosovo's international partners and that it has increased nationalist feelings, affecting the country's departure from pro-European orientation.

He says that the current leaders in Kosovo should return to close coordination with the United States, including on issues such as the decision to ban the circulation of the dinar, and says that in this election year in the countries of the European Union and the United States, after which , according to him, it will be unclear how the problems in the region will be handled, Kosovo must close the open issues with Serbia in order not to remain, as he says, a powder keg.

The Vice President of the Democratic League of Kosovo Lutfi Haziri said that 2023 was a "lost year" and that the moments created by the war in Ukraine and Israel's conflict in Gaza were not used by the government of Kosovo to "maximize demands" in relation to Serbia , which he described as "supporting and harboring terrorist groups". He adds that the government of Kosovo has wasted time engaging with Serbia and not keeping its word to international partners, behavior that, according to him, led Kosovo to punitive measures.

According to Mr. Haziri, this year's tensions in Kosovo have produced crises that have forced Kosovo's international partners to deal with them on a daily basis.

He says that the recent irritation between Kosovo and the international community regarding the decision to ban the circulation of the dinar in Kosovo is part of the same approach. According to him, the Democratic League of Kosovo considers that "implementation of the regulation (for banning the circulation of the dinar) is a constitutional obligation" but says that his subject would commit to a coordination with international factors.

Kosovo, he says, had to have "a better coordination, a cooperation, a pragmatism, in order to remove the problems from the table, to go towards a normalization."

"The past has clearly shown that in no case has the USA, when it has promised and made commitments to the people of Kosovo and the government of Kosovo, failed to keep its word, under any circumstances. And now we must in good faith also coordinate this step towards normalization with international mediators because the EU is our future home", he adds.

Asked if, as a supporter of the idea of exchanging territories as a solution to the issue of Kosovo and Serbia, he thinks that this idea is dead, Mr. Haziri said that "now in the Balkans, changing the borders is ruled out as a possible option because the war in Ukraine has problems that touching the external borders of states is practically the main problem".

He says that despite the attention focused on Ukraine and Israel's conflict in Gaza, Kosovo still remains a high priority for the international community. But, according to him, "Kosovo is being delayed... This government has lost two big moments, it has lost the opportunity to reach a comprehensive, legally binding agreement, where Serbia is forced to tear up the first page of the Constitution in relation to Kosovo ," Mr. Haziri declared. "Now Serbia is being asked for indirect recognition. At least, at this level, the interest of Kosovo should be maximized again. And that is a big step that Kosovo should take."

According to him, the elections held this year in the United States and in the countries of the European Union, may change the approach of international factors towards Kosovo and the region.

"It is understandable the concern that the Western Balkans remains an open or frozen problem, it is always a powder keg... and the sooner the problems in the region are closed, the better and easier it will be for a normalization of the region our and the European perspective."

Mr. Haziri accuses the Kurti government of leaving Kosovo's pro-European agenda. "This government ... increasing the national sentiment has decreased the European sentiment and the pro-European culture of the people of Kosovo, the expectation for integration," he adds. He says that the punitive measures of the EU are increasing this anti-European feeling in Kosovo./ VOA
