Session on Government Formation, Kurti Starts Speech with Trial of Former KLA
Albin Kurti speaks in Parliament

Kosovo's Prime Minister-designate, Albin Kurti, began his speech in the Assembly with the trial of former KLA leaders in The Hague...

President Vjosa Osmani announced that she has mandated the leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, as prime minister. After that, the Kosovo Assembly convened in an extraordinary session to form the Government.

The Speaker of the Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, at the opening of the session for the government vote, invited Prime Minister-designate Albin Kurti to present the composition of the new government's cabinet.

" The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Vjosa Osmani Sadriu, in support of Article 95 of the Constitution of Kosovo, with Decree No. 18-2026, dated February 11, 2026, has proposed to the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo Mr. Albin Kurti, candidate for Prime Minister to form the government of the Republic of Kosovo. Therefore, I invite the proposed candidate for Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Mr. Albin Kurti, to present the composition of the government for approval before the members of the Assembly, as well as his presentation for the next governing mandate," said Haxhiu.

Kosovo Prime Minister-designate Albin Kurti began his speech in the Assembly with the trial of former KLA leaders in The Hague. Kurti said that the proposal of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office to sentence former KLA leaders to 45 years in prison contradicts the truth and denies the historical and political context of the liberation war.

He added that the session on the formation of the Government and the constitutive session of the Assembly were held in the late hours precisely because of the trial against former KLA leaders in The Hague, Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Rexhep Selim and Kadri Veseli.

"The prosecution's request for a sentence of 45 years in prison for each of them, which also includes allegations of crimes against humanity, is an attempt that contradicts the truth and denies the historical and political context of our liberation war. The position of the Government of the Republic that I lead remains clear: crimes against humanity were committed in Kosovo against the Albanian civilian population, they were committed by the Yugoslav regime of Serbia under Milosevic. This is documented and internationally recognized. The equation between the leaders of the KLA and a genocidal regime is unsustainable ," Kurti said.

Kurti further thanked the citizens for their support and commitment to this democratic process. He emphasized that thanks to them, they have set a new historical record.

" Dear citizens, let me first thank you, those who voted for the Vetëvendosje Movement and helped set a historic record. This result is important, but I also want to thank all those who voted for other parties. The high turnout in the elections and the expression of free will are evidence of the high civic commitment to strengthening democracy and the electoral process ," he added.

Kurti also spoke about the achievements made during his last government mandate in terms of the economy.

"In almost the last 5 years, of which almost 1 year as a caretaker government, without full powers, we have built and developed a fairer, stronger and more inclusive Kosovo. We have an average real growth of 6 percent of the gross domestic product. The Gross Domestic Product, when we took over the government, was 7 billion euros, while now it has reached 11 billion euros. We project that this year it will reach 12 billion euros ," Kurti declared, among other things.

Kurti stated that the government has managed inflation with supportive policies for citizens and that the country ranks with the lowest inflation rate in the region, after Albania, also emphasizing the increase in employment and income. He added that in the new mandate he aims to bring the average salary in the public sector to over 1,000 euros, double child allowances from 30–45 euros currently and surpass several EU countries in this regard.

The leader of the LVV also spoke about allies and the country's security. He said that alliances will not waver, but will only strengthen in the next four years.

"Kosovo is more democratic and safer than ever before, Kosovo has aligned itself with peace, justice, and its democratic allies. Our alliance with the EU and the US and friendly countries will not waver because this cooperation is not a strategy, it is a value. In the next four years, we will strengthen the alliances ," he concluded.
