How is Serbia using its ties with China to block Kosovo?!

Serbia is using the connection with China to prevent the recognition of Kosovo in the international arena and to prevent Kosovo's membership in various international organizations!

Given that Russia has lost its diplomatic capital due to the war in Ukraine, Serbia is now relying on China, says researcher and president of the ESTIMA Institute in North Macedonia, Ana Krstinovska.

Krstinovska, in an interview for "The Geopost", stated that the Balkans are facing Chinese propaganda, as she emphasized that Serbia and the Republika Srpska region are being subjected to this influence the most. She added that countries such as Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro are exposed to Chinese propaganda but at a lower level.

" When we talk about the region, we see a clear division between the NATO allies, North Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro, plus Kosovo, and on the other side we see Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and especially the region of the Republic, Srpska, of which are much more subject to Chinese influence, not only in terms of information space, but also in terms of economic influence, and unlike the first group of four countries I mentioned, where China is becoming somewhat unwelcome or less welcome from the political elites, in Serbia and Bosnia, we see an increased Chinese presence in recent years ," she said.

According to Krstinovska, the Chinese influence in the Balkan region is not so visible, because the media are not well informed about the methods of disinformation used by Beijing, which, according to her, are much different from those of Russia.

" If we talk about Chinese activities, information and influence activities in the Western Balkans, I think they go under the radar. They are much less explored and much less attention is being paid to Chinese activities. And that's partly because our civil society and our media are not as well informed, they don't have the understanding and the capacity to deal with the information threats posed by the Chinese presence in the region. This is because China uses different tools compared to Russia. It uses much less disinformation and relies much more on propaganda, which is spreading biased or largely embellished information about China and what China is doing, and in turn eliminates all criticism of China or its actions. of her in the Region" , she said.

Krstinovska said that from all this propaganda, Kosovo is the one that is most endangered of all the countries of the Western Balkans. According to her, Serbia is using the connection with China to hinder the recognition of Kosovo in the international arena and to prevent Kosovo's membership in various international organizations!

" China is very important when it comes to the citizenship of Kosovo and the recognition of Kosovo. And perhaps the main conclusion that I can share with you, especially after the Russian aggression in Ukraine, is that we see increased efforts by Serbia to use its privileged relationship with China. Basically, Serbia is relying much more on China now, it was Russia in the past, but given that Russia has lost its diplomatic capital due to the war in Ukraine, Serbia is focusing much more on China to essentially blocked Kosovo's efforts to secure international recognition or to seek membership in various international organizations ", said Krstinovska.

She also pointed out Kosovo's inability to face this challenge. Totally disconnected from relations with China, Krstinovska suggests that Kosovo should rethink its foreign policy and increase efforts for international recognition.

" Unfortunately, although I hope that the situation will change, I have not seen systematic efforts or activities on the part of Kosovo to somehow address this challenge. I had the feeling that Kosovo is not very aware of the potential that China has to hinder its efforts for international recognition. And this is probably a message to the policy makers of Kosovo that this is something that they should take seriously and work on seriously ," said Krstinovska. / "Pamphlet" adapted from "The Geopost"
